Bedtime Stories 13: Weather Report

"the weather" by Lisa Robertson 5 of 7

Recorded here is “Thursday” by Lisa Robertson from her book of poems, “the weather”. I began a series of 7 posts where I read aloud poems from “the weather” by Lisa Robertson in February. Each one is titled a day of the week - I first published Sunday, then Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. It is astonishing to me how slow this protracted week is going, but fun as it is spring and she, through me, begins to mention it.

“Now bending come we crawling. Now crisp come we falling.”

“When in spring we want to speak in belts of light.”

“We build our machine of faces.”

“When pushed to the wall, art is too slow.”

“When threatened, we study everything.”

I’m growing more in love with her while listening to my voice reading hers - more in love with myself too?

Glossary of words I do not know the definitions of:

cormorants - a large, black sea bird with a long neck and body.

runnel* - a narrow channel in the ground for liquid to flow through. a brook or rill. a small stream of a particular liquid.

cogitations - the act of thinking very carefully about a subject, or the thoughts themselves.

insuperable - (especially of a problem) so great or severe that it cannot be defeated dealt with successfully.

motility - the ability of plants, organisms, and very small forms of life to be able to move by themselves.

sensoria - plural of sensorium, the sensory apparatus or faculties considered as a whole. The ability of a person’s brain to understand signals from the senses, which affects their state of consciousness.

*Runnel is a favorite noun of hers, I’m sure it will show up again.
