Cape Performance
file under: costume, performanceI am preparing a performance— I want to impress & dazzle, not just with my skill but also my showmanship & flair. There is a karaoke element to it, perhaps it is just karaoke, & I’ve made a wild circumstance around it. I imagine many outfits, scenarios & songs. I decide to wear a cape & white platform boots, but I am concerned that my voice is rusty & out of practice & the song is in the wrong key. Suddenly it becomes clear that I am not in a planning stage, that this whole time I am actually onstage waiting to begin — the stage is the same repeatedly painted chalky black of my high school’s theater & I notice I am also in a spotlight. This relieves my anxiety because once I start, it will soon be over. So I may as well start, “I’m pretty rusty,” I say, & then begin.
